Colin Shields Signs for the Steelers 2012/13

The UNISON Sheffield Steelers are delighted to confirm the signing of 32 year old forward Colin Shields.

Shields has played over 230 Elite League games scoring over 120 goals and averaging 1.35 points a game during his season with Newcastle and 3 stay in Belfast. Last summer Colin left the Giants to sign for top French side Morzine.

With 42 GB appearance behind him (scoring 21 goals) Colin Shields is one of the hottest properties in the British Ice Hockey game and will join a Steelers team already boasting his National team mates Ashley Tait, Jonathan Phillips, Markk Thomas and Jason Hewitt.

"It was great to get the call from Ryan Finnerty" said Shields "We have been talking for some time and I think we were both keen to get the deal done and dusted so we could both prepare for a big season next year

"I need to be assured I was coming back to the Elite League to join a good, strong and ambitious club. I needed to know that Ryan wanted to win, the Steelers wanted to win and that all our efforts would be on that goal. Once we had spoken we both realised we were both the perfect fit for each other. I'm excited, I'd like to get going right now. I wish I could play for them this weekend. The Steelers are one of those clubs that inside everyone hopes they get the chance to play for one day. I know now that that day is approaching fast. Roll on September"

Ryan Finnerty confirmed that Shields would be the first of a few new additions he hoped to bring in ahead of next season. "It's no secret that we lost ability and depth when Robert Dowd moved on last year. Add to that when we lost Ashley Tait this winter, you just can't go out and find top quality Brit's. It was our number one priority to bring another top end player in and in Colin Shields we have a man who can score you 100 points. Add him to the Brit pack we have and I think we are now back on top in that department.

"Colin add's us depth, add's us quality and add's us scoring. He also brings leadership and experience. At his time of life he isn't here for the ride, here is here to get the job done. He has played in North America, Europe and of course in this league as well, he has led the scoring in this league and I see no reason why he can't do it again. I look forward to working with Colin next season"
