Finnerty Can Sleep Now DeCaro Returns

Steelers head coach Ryan Finnerty has spoken about how pleased he was to re-sign John DeCaro and how confident he is that Big John will lead the club to victory next season

"The night I re-signed John DeCaro I had the best nights sleep in weeks" said Steelers head coach Ryan Finnerty

"At the end of last season I had Johnny in my line up for this coming year, then when he dropped the bombshell he was leaving it through my team plans in different directions. I had looked all over the world, even saw a potential new goalie when Ashley Tait and I flew to Italy, none of them turned me on though. None of them gave me confidence that they could play 60 games and lead us to a trophy.

"Even after Johnny called me and said he wanted to come back I continued to look whilst he sorted out his baggage in Norway. I ran my eye's over dozens of guys who were interested in us and none of them stood out. It was like this last year, I just didn't feel comfortable last summer with the goalies being offered to us, then as soon as I saw DeCaro's name I knew he was the right guy. I get the same feeling this year as well. I have no doubts that he is the right guy for us.

"I read some of the comments being made and think some are just making Johnny the scapegoat for what happened at the end of the year, Johnny saved our ass for the most part of last year, he wasn't the reason we ended on a low

"When I mentioned Johnny was available again of course some people questioned me because he had wanted to leave earlier on and move to Norway. I wasn't bothered about that, he wanted to better himself, earn more money for him and his family, who wouldn't be tempted by that. He followed the $ signs, I can see that too. I'm just pleased he saw the light, reconsidered and made the call to me. He is my goalie, he is my number one and I am as happy with his signing as I am any of the others I have made

"We haven't seen the best of John DeCaro and he will make those who doubt him eat their words by the end of March next season"
