Stephenson - 'I want to win'

Forget Europe for Now – I want to Win says Stephenson

Matt Stephenson has turned his back on interest from several European clubs to return to Sheffield, both the Steelers and the University.

Stephenson enjoyed a successful first year scoring 7 goals and 30 assists in last years assault on the league championship

"It's flattering when clubs show an interest in you and as a professional I had to examine what was out there" said Stephenson "Ryan (Finnerty) and the club were brilliant and let me see what was about. Ryan has been in that position before and I thank him for that. The problem was that every time I turned my lap top on I saw that we had made another great signing and I was just thinking I can't leave the Steelers I want to be a part of that winning team

"I enjoyed my first year and think the second one will be even better with team that we are putting together. I'm sure we all learned a lot from the way last season ended. We will be better I am sure"

Finnerty confirmed that the Steelers were still looking for one further D man to complete a six man unit for next years team "When Danny Meyers signed there was an option to go with 5 D and just 3 imports but I want to be big, strong and water tight at the back end next season so it will be six we sign.

"Matt is an American league D man, he knows the league, knows he can be a force in our league and sees that this team can fufill his ambition to win a championship. He brings a nastiness at the back, he isn't afraid to get dirty and drop the gloves whilst he showed with his numbers last season that he can add important goals and points as the year goes on. I felt it was imperative he returned, having him back just makes us better"
