Tom Squires Leaves the Steelers

The Sheffield Steelers have this morning confirmed that forward Tom Squires has left the club and next season will play for the Steeldogs in the EPL

The Steelers had made a double your money offer to Tom to remain with the Steelers on a two-way deal with the Telford Tigers, whereby both clubs would jointly manage his development with Squires spending some training time in Sheffield whilst also training and playing weekend games with the Tigers. Squires would then also play for the Steelers throughout the year on dates when Telford werent playing.

"We felt that Tom needed to get  away from Sheffield for a bit" said Ryan Finnerty "My Dad kicked me out to go and play hockey when I was 15, Hewey and Tomo both left Manchester for London as youngsters, Dowdy went to the States then Sheffield. Most if not all of the really good players do that. Its about developing you off the ice as much as on it

"I was in Cardiff when Ben Davies left for Basingstoke. It did him the world of good, look at him now. Lachowicz moved from Nottingham to Manchester, now he is a star of our league.

"Tom isn't a kid anymore, he is 21 years of age. This isn't a Steelers vs Steeldogs thing, we wanted him to go to Telford to get him away from Sheffield for part of the year. Playing in a team like Telford would have helped him develop because he would have logged more minutes and also played in all situations, first power-play, first penalty kill.

"We didn't just come up with Telford, we spoke to several clubs and thought Telford was the best way forward to develop Tom and make him a better person, better player and a Steeler of the future. I think others perhaps got in his ear and made the grass seem greener

"We move on though, we have lots going on. We wish Tom all the best, he is a good kid"
