The first of several new faces in the Steelers line up has today been confirmed by head coach Aaron Fox.
30 Year old defenseman Kevin Tansey joins from Danish side Herning Blue Fox.
After a college career in the NCAA with Clarkson University, Tansey turned pro and played nearly 200 games in the AHL and ECHL, making the ECHL all-star team in 16/17, before heading to Europe in 2019 with spells in Czechia, Slovakia, Austria and Denmark last season
“Kevin is a big 2 way Dman that likes to play a physical game defensively” said Fox. “He skates extremely well for his size and is a guy who can activate very well from the back end in transition.
“He will come in and log big minutes and can play in all situations. He’s coming off a good season in Denmark but has also excelled in some other top leagues previously.
“He brings a ton of character and experience to our group.”
It will be Tansey’s first taste of the UK “I think I visited as a child but this will be my first experience of Great Britain, and I’m excited by the challenge” he said.
“I’ve spoken with Sheffield before and was close last season to heading over, I have some good friends that have played in the UK and for Sheffield, guys like Adrian Saxrud-Danielson, he gave me a glowing reference of the Steelers, the organisation and the fans.”
The conversations this summer ended with Tansey deciding that Sheffield would be his next destination “We spoke about what was expected and Aaron told me I would be joining a good team with a good strong group of guys.
“I think he is expecting me to be a leader on the team and I’m certainly prepared to do whatever it takes to help the club win.”
When asked to describe himself as a player Kevin replied “I’m a two way defenseman, I play hard and I don’t shy away from the battle.”
Kevin Tansey will make his Steelers debut on Saturday 9th September when the Steelers take on Nottingham Panthers in their first exhibition game of the new season.
After pre-season fixtures with Nottingham and Cardiff, the Steelers will commence their league campaign on Saturday 23rd September with a home opener (full schedule to be confirmed by the league shortly).
