Aatu Aarnio joins the Sheffield Steelers for the 2026-27 Elite League season, bringing size, mobility and extensive experience from Finland’s top professional league.

The 25-year-old defenceman arrives in Sheffield after spending the previous four seasons with Liiga side Sport, where he established himself as a dependable two-way blueliner across 183 appearances in one of Europe’s most competitive leagues.

Aarnio is a defence-first player who prides himself on his ability to shut down opponents, win battles and play a strong, physical game. At the same time, he possesses the skating ability and puck-moving skills to contribute effectively in transition and help drive offence from the back end.

Head Coach Aaron Fox believes Aarnio’s style of play is perfectly suited to the Elite League, highlighting his skating, defensive awareness and ability to make clean retrievals and exits under pressure. His strong gap control, physical presence and willingness to compete in all areas of the ice make him a valuable addition to the Steelers blue line.

Before arriving in Sheffield, Aarnio gained a reputation in Finland as a reliable and consistent defenceman capable of playing significant minutes against top opposition while contributing at both ends of the rink.

After speaking with fellow Finn and Steelers teammate Mikko Juusola, Aarnio was eager to make the move to South Yorkshire and begin the next chapter of his career in front of the passionate Steelers fanbase.

With proven Liiga experience and a strong two-way game, Aarnio adds stability, competitiveness and quality to the Steelers defensive unit as the club continues its pursuit of silverware in the 2026-27 season.
