Colton Saucerman will be the final blue line summer signing for the Steelers after head coach Aaron Fox confirmed his addition to the squad this morning.
The 31 year old 5’9” defenceman joins the Steelers following a productive season in the East Coast Hockey League with the Allen Americans. For the two years prior to that, Colton had plied his trade in Europe, first with HC Innsbruck (Austria) and then in Slovakia with HC Kosice where he posted impressive numbers with both sides.
“Colton his a high end 2 way defenseman who can log big minutes and play in all situations” said Fox.
“He plays with some jam for his size, is a smooth skater and has high end hockey IQ.
“Colton will come in and give that group a calming presence and be a guy we will count on to play winning hockey.
He’s a character piece that will also keep the room light”.
Fox confirmed that Saucerman would be the final blue line signing saying “I think the back end is now complete and I love the look of how we will line up, in my own mine I have my combinations sorted but I guess until we all hit the ice for training camp, nothing will be decided”.
Speaking from his home in Canada, Saucerman couldn’t hide is excitement of joining the club and hooking up once again with two good friends, Daniel Ciampini and Kevin Tansey. “I think the move was decided at my wedding” he said. The three of us decided Sheffield was the place for us all to play and I’m just happy that Foxy and I could reach an agreement.
“We’ve been speaking for a while, last year we were close but for whatever reason it didn’t happen. Now it has and I’m looking forward to getting over there and starting”.
Asked why Sheffield, Colton replied “Daniel couldn’t have spoken highly enough about his time over there, the quality of ownership, coaching, housing and the way the guys were treated by everyone. Then the facilities, the arena and of course the fans.
“We’ve all played in situations where that isn’t the case, and it makes a huge difference knowing you and family will be treated well.
“Already I’ve seen the club at work as we have been through the visa process together with Shaun, there is always someone to reach out to”.
Saucerman describes his style of play as “Dynamic and exciting”, continuing “I love being offensive, I love that side of the game but I take my defensive responsibilities very seriously. I’m competitive and I enjoy the physical side of the game and the battle.
“I may be small in stature but I get involved and I enjoy the fight”
