Balmas with a Brace The latest chapter in the Steelers-Panthers rivalry delivered once again as Sheffield came from behind to beat Nottingham 3-2 in overtime at the Utilita Arena. A goalless opening period was followed by a fast start to the second, with Mitchell Balmas putting the Steelers ahead after just 16 seconds. Nottingham responded through Tim Doherty and Joe Hazeldine to take a 2-1 lead, but Balmas struck again in the third period to tie the game and record his 250th EIHL point. The game eventually headed to overtime, where Ryan Tait fired home the winner to secure the extra point and send the home crowd into celebration. First Period – Steelers 0, Panthers 0 The Steelers-Panthers rivalry returned for another season and the intensity was there from the opening face-off. Nottingham enjoyed the better of the early exchanges, forcing Matt Greenfield into several important saves during the opening ten minutes. Spencer Naas and Tim Doherty both tested the Steelers netminder as the visitors built pressure. Sheffield gradually grew into the contest and created one of their best opportunities following some excellent work from Leevi Teissala. The puck found Logan Roe arriving at the back post, but his effort slipped wide. Nottingham finished the period with a 15-7 advantage in shots, but neither side could break the deadlock. Second Period – Steelers 1, Panthers 2 The Steelers needed only 16 seconds of the second period to take the lead. Olivier Archambault worked the puck from behind the Nottingham net and found Mitchell Balmas, who fired home past Mat Robson to make it 1-0. Sheffield then enjoyed a strong spell and Robson was forced into several important saves. At the other end, Greenfield produced a big stop to force a defensive-zone face-off, but Nottingham made the next opportunity count. Tim Doherty fired high past Greenfield to level the game six minutes into the period. Three minutes later, the Panthers had turned the contest around as Joe Hazeldine found the net to make it 2-1. The Steelers were then forced onto the penalty kill after Ivan Björkly-Nordström was sent to the box. Even shorthanded, Sheffield came close to an equaliser when Tim Gettinger and Mikko Juusola broke away two-on-none, only for Robson to deny them. Captain Robert Dowd then helped raise the physical intensity as the hits began to fly. Third Period – Steelers 2, Panthers 2 Sheffield started the final period strongly, although play was interrupted by a lengthy delay following an incident in the stands. Once the game resumed, the Steelers were handed a four-minute power play when Jaakko Niskala was assessed a double minor for high-sticking following a review. Nottingham initially stood firm, but the Steelers continued to press. Eventually, Balmas found space at the top of the circles and fired past Robson to level the game at 2-2. It was his second goal of the night and also brought up EIHL point number 250 for the Steelers forward. Neither side could find a winner in regulation, sending another Steelers-Panthers battle into overtime. Overtime – Steelers 3, Panthers 2 Both teams created chances early in the extra period before Sheffield were awarded a penalty shot after a breakaway was illegally halted. Balmas stepped forward with the opportunity to complete his hat-trick and win the game, but Robson made the save. Greenfield was then called into action at the other end as Nottingham searched for the winner. The decisive moment eventually came on a quick Steelers break. Adam Rockwood drove down the boards before finding Ryan Tait, who took the puck in stride and fired home the overtime winner. Game over. Steelers 3, Panthers 2.
