From the Rangers to the Steelers – Tim Gettinger heads to Sheffield
The Sheffield Steelers have completed their forward group for the 2026-27 season with the exciting signing of former NHL forward Tim Gettinger.
The 6’6″ American arrives in Sheffield after an impressive professional career in North America that saw him make 346 American Hockey League appearances (scoring 81 times with 174 poimnts) as well as 16 NHL games across four separate call-ups with the New York Rangers.
Last season marked Gettinger’s first experience of European hockey, icing for Schwenninger Wild Wings in Germany’s DEL, and now the powerful forward is looking forward to the next chapter of his career with the Steelers.

Speaking for the first time since agreeing terms with the club, Gettinger admitted it was the family atmosphere around the organisation that convinced both him and his wife that Sheffield was the right move.
“I’ve been aware of the league in the UK for some time and what a strong reputation the Steelers have. Aaron reached out to me and told me all about the club, the city and what the organisation is all about. After talking everything through with my wife, we both felt it was a great opportunity and we’re looking forward to making the move and becoming part of the Steelers family.
“One of the biggest things that attracted me was the family culture around the club. Aaron spoke about the players, the staff and the fans, and how everyone makes you feel welcome. With a newborn baby, that was really important to us. We wanted somewhere we’d feel comfortable, somewhere that felt like home, and Sheffield really stood out for us.
“As a player, I like to be reliable all over the ice. I’m a 200-foot player who takes pride in being strong defensively, using my size and reach, but I also want to contribute offensively, get to the hard areas and play a physical game. I’ll do whatever it takes to help the team win, and I can’t wait to get over to Sheffield and get started.”

Steelers Head Coach Aaron Fox believes Gettinger possesses a unique blend of size, skating ability and versatility that will make him an important addition to the club’s forward group.
“Tim is a guy who will bring an elite two-way game to our group. At 6’6”, he skates exceptionally well and has a really unique skill set for a player of his size.
“He averaged half a point per game across more than 300 games in the American Hockey League and is still at a great age. All of his North American career was spent between the AHL and NHL, so he brings a tremendous amount of experience and a high compete level.
“Tim has played both centre and wing throughout his career, giving us another versatile player who can fill multiple roles. He’s spent a lot of time as a net-front presence on the power play and has always been a high-end penalty killer.
“He’s the final forward to join our group, and I’m really looking forward to working with all of them.”
