It took two summers of persistence, but Head Coach Aaron Fox has finally secured his target with the signing of 35-year-old, 6’3” defenceman Jordon Southorn.
Southorn, a seasoned blueliner with a wealth of experience across North America and Europe, will also be completing his Master’s degree at Sheffield Hallam University during his time with the Steelers.
“I’ve been talking with Aaron for two summers now,” said Southorn. “I was close to joining last year, so I’ve always kept my eye on the UK — and Sheffield in particular. We spoke again this summer, and I guess our visions aligned: we both want to win championships.
I have friends and former teammates who have played in Sheffield — Patrick Watling, Colton Saucerman, Kevin Tansey — and they all spoke so highly of the team, the organisation, the fans, and the city. I guess that’s why they keep coming back.
I saw the team’s success in the CHL, and every year the standard of the league improves. The quality of players coming in across the league is getting stronger. In the end, it wasn’t a question of if I should join — it was more, how can I not go to Sheffield?”
When asked what fans can expect from him, Southorn added:
“My game has changed as I’ve gotten older. When you’re young, it’s all about scoring, jumping into the play, and racking up points. Now, I focus on being a strong two-way player — someone who can contribute at both ends of the ice.
I bring my best every night. That’s what fans can expect from me.”
Southorn’s professional career began after four seasons in the QMJHL with Prince Edward Island, turning pro in 2010 with the Trenton Devils (ECHL). He spent the next several years between the ECHL and AHL, including a brief three-game stint with the Dundee Stars.
His move to Europe came in 2016 with Torpedo Ust-Kamenogorsk in the VHL, followed by a KHL season with Barys Astana. He later played in Slovakia, the ICEHL, Germany, and another KHL stint before joining Grenoble (France) last season.
Now, he brings his talent, size, and veteran presence to Sheffield.
Head Coach Aaron Fox commented:
“Jordon is a big-bodied veteran defenceman who brings a very well-rounded game to our group. He skates well for his size and is a proven winner, having claimed multiple trophies in his career.
He’s played various roles across different teams and is incredibly versatile — someone we can trust in all situations. He also adds size and physicality to our back end, which will be key this season.
His commitment to studying at Sheffield Hallam University also played a major role in getting this deal over the line, and their support has been hugely appreciated.”
