Biography

The Sheffield Steelers have secured the services of promising young defenceman Liam Steele on his first full-time professional contract ahead of the 2026–27 season, following his promotion from the Sheffield Steeldogs.

Steele enjoyed a standout 2025–26 campaign with the Steeldogs, registering 19 goals and 47 points across 57 league and playoff appearances. His impressive performances also helped guide the team to Cup success in 2026, underlining his growing influence at senior level. His form earned him opportunities with the Steelers late in the season, including involvement during the playoff finals weekend.

Head coach Aaron Fox praised Steele’s rapid development:

“Liam came in and really impressed me with how hard he works and how quickly he adjusted his game after a couple of years without playing. It was a great development year for him, logging big minutes with the Dogs while practising with us full time. He’s a big kid who skates really well and can play a heavy game. He fits the mould of how we want to play, and we expect him to be someone we can rely on next year.”

Steele’s progress has also been recognised on the international stage, earning him a call-up to the Great Britain national team ahead of the World Championships.

Speaking on his move to the Steelers, Steele said:

“This is why I came to Sheffield last year — to earn a place on the Steelers team — and I’m delighted to get the opportunity. I felt I had a strong season with the Steeldogs, and being able to play big minutes there while training daily with the Steelers really helped my development. I’m looking forward to a hard summer of training and getting back into the locker room for what we hope will be a great season.”

A graduate of the Sheffield 2-way development pathway, Steele has made a seamless transition into the professional game. Born in Cobham, he developed through the Guildford junior system before moving to Canada to attend Stanstead College, where he captained the varsity programme and represented Great Britain at both U18 and U20 levels.

He later gained valuable North American experience in the BCHL with the Chilliwack Chiefs and Salmon Arm Silverbacks, recording 14 points in 33 regular-season games, along with four points in the playoffs.

Standing at 6’4” and 225 lbs, Steele brings a strong physical presence on the blue line, combined with excellent skating ability and composure on the puck. A former GB U20 standout and NCAA (ECAC) Champion, he is widely regarded as one of the most exciting young British defencemen and is set to play a key role in the Steelers’ future.
