Macoy Erkamps joins the Sheffield Steelers for the 2026-27 Elite League season, bringing a wealth of experience from North America and Europe together with a reputation as a dependable, defence-first defenceman.

The Canadian blueliner arrives in Sheffield following a season with the Iserlohn Roosters in Germany’s DEL, having previously spent two-and-a-half seasons in Sweden’s Allsvenskan with Västervik and AIK. Before making the move to Europe, Erkamps enjoyed a successful six-year professional career in North America, playing 137 games in the American Hockey League (AHL) and a further 122 in the ECHL.

A strong skater with excellent defensive awareness, Erkamps is recognised for his ability to play against the opposition’s top forwards while helping his team transition quickly from defence to attack. Although his priority is always to defend, he is equally comfortable joining the rush and contributing offensively when opportunities arise.

Head Coach Aaron Fox believes Erkamps’ competitiveness, skating ability and willingness to do whatever it takes to win make him an ideal fit for the Steelers. His strong positioning, active stick and understanding of the game away from the puck are qualities that will make him an important part of Sheffield’s defensive unit.

Before agreeing to join the Steelers, Erkamps spoke with former Sheffield players Kevin Tansey, Daniel Ciampini and Josh Nicholls, all of whom spoke highly of the club, the city and the passionate fan base.

With extensive experience gained in the AHL, ECHL, Allsvenskan and DEL, Erkamps adds leadership, reliability and a strong defensive presence to the Steelers blue line as the club looks to compete for honours throughout the 2026-27 season.
