Matt Greenfield returns for his fifth season with the Sheffield Steelers, continuing his outstanding career with the club after first arriving in 2022. The elite netminder committed his future to the Steelers in the summer of 2025, signing a three-year contract extension that will keep him in Sheffield through to at least the end of the 2027–28 season.

Since joining the organisation, Greenfield has firmly established himself as one of the greatest goaltenders in club history. He surpassed Jody Lehman’s long-standing shutout record by recording his 25th clean sheet in a 6–0 playoff semi-final victory over the Manchester Storm, further cementing his legacy between the pipes.

A two-time Elite League MVP during his time in Sheffield, Greenfield has been a cornerstone of the team’s success. He played a pivotal role in the Steelers’ historic Grand Slam triumph in 2024 and continued his excellence on the European stage, finishing as the leading goaltender in the 2025 Champions Hockey League.

Head Coach Aaron Fox highlighted Greenfield’s importance to the team:

“How can I not be excited about this one? Greener is a back-to-back league MVP who gives us top-end performance and a chance to win every night.

Securing him on a long-term deal is a huge piece for us, both now and moving forward. Not only is he an exceptional player on the ice, but he’s also a fantastic person and teammate off it. His preparation and professionalism are first class.

We weren’t sure if it would be possible, but after exploring other options, he felt Sheffield was still the best place for him and his wife Sydney. I’m delighted we stayed patient and got this done.”

Greenfield has made 237 appearances for the Steelers across all competitions, including the Elite League, Challenge Cup, Playoffs, and Champions Hockey League.

Speaking about his decision to remain in Sheffield, Greenfield said:

“The grass isn’t always greener, as they say.

I looked at my options, but Sheffield kept coming out on top. We have such a great group — teammates, coaches, management, ownership, and of course the incredible fans. Knowing we’ll be together for the next three seasons is a great feeling.”

Before joining the Steelers, Greenfield spent time in the ECHL with the Kansas City Mavericks, following a successful collegiate career at the University of Calgary between 2016 and 2020.

Widely regarded as one of the best goaltenders to ever wear a Steelers jersey, Greenfield remains a key figure as the club continues to chase further success.
