The Sheffield Steelers secured the long-term future of star forward Mitchell Balmas in May, when the club confirmed the Elite League’s top scorer had signed a new two-year contract extension.

Since arriving in Sheffield in 2023 from the American Hockey League’s Iowa Wild, Balmas has developed into one of the most exciting and dominant offensive players in the Elite League. His impact has been immediate and remarkably consistent, with the Canadian forward not missing a single game since joining the club.

In 218 appearances across Elite League, Challenge Cup, Playoff, and Champions Hockey League competition, Balmas has recorded an outstanding 104 goals and 251 points, numbers that have already moved him into 21st place on the Steelers’ all-time scoring charts after just three seasons in orange.

Renowned for his elite skating, creativity, quick hands, and clinical finishing, Balmas quickly established himself as one of the league’s most dangerous forwards. He was a key figure in the Steelers’ historic 2023–24 treble-winning season, helping the club lift the Elite League title, Challenge Cup, and Playoff Championship.

Head Coach Aaron Fox was thrilled to retain one of the league’s premier talents:

“It’s really exciting to get Balms back on a two-year contract. Anytime you can lock up the league MVP for multiple years, you’re going to feel pretty good about it.

“His offensive numbers speak for themselves, but he also contributes in all areas of the game, including on the penalty kill. He’s a superstar player who is extremely coachable and a fantastic teammate.

“We’re obviously delighted to have him back.”

Speaking after agreeing his new deal, Balmas explained why continuing his career in Sheffield felt like the natural decision:

“Sheffield feels like my second home. I love playing for the Steelers and skating at the Arena in front of our incredible fans.

“From the moment I arrived, I felt comfortable here. We’ve built a special core group within the team and there’s a real belief that we can continue competing for every trophy available.

“I know the club, the people, and the city now, and I’m proud to be a Steeler for a long time to come.”

Balmas remains one of the key pieces of the Steelers roster as the club continues preparations for the 2026–27 season and beyond.
