Tait the Hero with a Brace

The Sheffield Steelers are through to the Challenge Cup semi-finals after a commanding 5-2 victory over Manchester Storm at the Utilita Arena on Wednesday night.
With qualification on the line, Aaron Fox’s side produced a blistering opening period, racing into a 4-1 lead through Ryan Tait’s double, Leevi Teissala and Tim Gettinger.
Manchester reduced the deficit in the third, but Mikko Juusola struck late to put the result beyond doubt and confirm Sheffield’s place in the last four.
The Steelers’ semi-final opponents are not yet known, with the remaining Challenge Cup fixtures still to determine the final positions.
It was an important night on the ice, but also an emotional one, with players, coaches and supporters coming together during the third period to remember Adam Johnson, three years on from his tragic passing.
First Period – Steelers Come Flying Out
Knowing exactly what was at stake, the Steelers started with purpose and immediately put Manchester under pressure.
The breakthrough arrived at 4:35.
Ryan Tait combined with Evan Jasper before finding the net for the opening goal, although initially neither the players nor many inside the Arena appeared certain the puck had crossed the line.
Logan Roe also collected an assist as Sheffield made the perfect start.

Less than a minute later it was 2-0.
Macoy Erkamps drove the play forward and, after Evan Weninger made the initial save, Leevi Teissala reacted quickest to the loose puck and tapped home at 5:34 for his first goal since the opening weekend of the season.

Storm head coach Cameron Critchlow immediately called his timeout in an attempt to halt Sheffield’s momentum.
It made little difference.
At 7:30, Tait struck again, carrying the puck across the blue line before firing an excellent shot into the top corner for his second of the night.

The Steelers had three goals inside eight minutes and the Arena was rocking.
Manchester found a response after Sheffield were forced onto the penalty kill, although the home side successfully saw off both Adam Rockwood’s roughing minor and a subsequent slashing call against Gettinger.
At 14:07, however, Stephen Johnson converted for Storm to make it 3-1.
Sheffield responded before the break.
Gettinger broke down the boards and attempted to find Brandon Whistle in front, but a deflection sent the puck past Weninger instead.
The goal, timed at 16:44, restored Sheffield’s three-goal advantage, with Olivier Archambault and Roe credited with the assists.
Roe’s helper was his third point of the period.

Second Period – Steelers Keep Control
The scoring slowed during the middle 20 minutes, but Sheffield remained firmly in control of proceedings.
Both teams created opportunities without finding a breakthrough.
Jasper produced one of Sheffield’s best chances of the period when he broke down the boards and appeared to have a route towards goal before being knocked away from the puck by a recovering Storm defender.
The home crowd appealed for a penalty, but play continued.
At the other end, Matt Greenfield remained alert whenever Manchester threatened as the Steelers carried their 4-1 advantage into the final period.

Third Period – Storm Push, Steelers Respond
Sheffield again started brightly after the restart, with Weninger denying chances from Gettinger and Olivier Archambault.
Manchester, though, were not finished.
A high puck dropped invitingly for Anton Karlsson, who produced an excellent finish over Greenfield’s right shoulder at 44:46 to reduce the deficit to 4-2.
Shortly afterwards came the most poignant moment of the evening.
In the 47th minute, play gave way to a tribute to Adam Johnson, three years after his passing.
Players and coaches stood arm in arm as supporters around the Arena rose to applaud, remembering Adam and showing once again that the thoughts of the hockey community remain with everyone affected by his loss.
When play resumed, Storm continued to push.
Manchester thought they had reduced the deficit to one with around ten minutes remaining, but the Steelers coaching staff quickly challenged the play for offside.
After video review, the goal was overturned.
It proved a significant moment.
Sheffield were then handed their first power play of the evening when Joe Nardi was sent to the penalty box following an incident with Teissala behind the goal line.
The Steelers couldn’t convert, but the pressure was beginning to tell on a Manchester side who knew defeat would end their hopes of catching Sheffield.
The decisive goal eventually arrived at 55:42.
Mikko Juusola was sent clear and the Finn made no mistake, beating Weninger to make it 5-2 and send the Steelers towards the Challenge Cup semi-finals.

Macoy Erkamps was quickly on hand when tempers briefly flared following the goal, ensuring the situation went no further.
From there, Sheffield saw out the closing minutes before the final buzzer confirmed their progression.
Semi-Final Bound
The victory means the Steelers have done what they set out to achieve — secure a place in the Challenge Cup semi-finals.
Exactly who they will face will be determined once the remaining group fixtures have been completed.
But for now, Sheffield can celebrate another important step towards potential silverware.
Ryan Tait was named Steelers Man of the Match following his two-goal performance on a night when Sheffield delivered when it mattered most.
