Steelers Fight Back to Beat the Storm 5-3

Steelers remain unbeaten on the road this season after coming from behind to beat Manchester Storm 5-3

Matt Greenfield backstopped the Steelers to victory in his first start of the year in Manchester this season.

Storm took an early lead before Marco Vallerand levelled – Josh Nicholls bagged a brace in the middle period to put the Steelers in control before the Storm fought back to tie it 3-3

Dominic Cormier scored the winner with 7.25 remaining and Mikko Juusola added an empty net goal for a 5-3 victory

First Period.

Manchester off to a flyer scoring after just 61 seconds with Johnny Corneil scoring after a scramble in front of Matt Greenfield’s goal.

Greenfield was called into action shortly after when first Phillips fired into his glove and then Morrow with a blast from the point.

Mark Simpson had the Steelers first opportunity but fired wide.

Mark Simpson stared on the penalty kill with some outstanding work before Vallerand returned.

08.31 and a good old fashioned fight with Kevin Tansey going punch for punch with Dallas Ehrdhardt

Both players went to the box for five minutes.

Phillips with a big shot that Greenfield got across to and makes a big save.

Corneil, the goalscorer, this time went to the penalty box for delaying the game and Steelers on their first power-play at 14.31

15.17 and Marco Vallerand fires past Weninger to tie the game 1-1 (Ciampini and Dowd)

17.12 and Scott Allen sits out 2 for cross checking – Steelers killed the Storm PP with the best chance coming Steelers way through Mikko Juusola

Second Period .

Steelers came out hard and fast with Marco Vallerand firing a shot from the left wing that Weninger saved.

21.08 and Steelers led for the first time when Patrick Watling assisted on Josh Nicholls goal, Nicholls turned and spun around and released a quick shot (1-2)

It’s end to end with Manchester hitting the cross bar followed by Saucerman going close at the other end.

Simpson drove the net as Ciampini took a big shot however Weninger kicked the puck out of Simmers reach

28.10 Simpson again involved as Nicholls scored his second of the night to double the Steelers lead to 3-1

Daniel Ciampini went close on a breakaway, Weninger again making the save.End of the second period

Third Period.

44.14 and Corneil scores his second of the night to bring it back to 2-3

Storm go close seconds later with Greenfield making a great stop

Diffley with a massive shot that Weninger didn’t see – but saved

With 11.13 remaining Zach Phillips tied the game 3-3 with a nice finish that Greenfield could do nothing about

Manchester went looking for the winner as the Steelers tried to close the door

Mark Simpson went close after an end to end rush – Weninger saving.

Then with 7.25 on the clock Cormier’s shot found it’s way through for what turned out to be the game winner (with Simpson assisting)


Daniel Ciampini went close from a tight angel but ti remained 3-4

57.35 and Manchester called a time out and pulled Weninger to the bench for the extra attacker.

57.45 and Steelers make it 5-3 with Mikko Juusola scoring the empty net goal


58.55 and the Storms last chance as Nikki was called for holding – Steelers killed the penalty and ran down the clock
