Steelers Complete Blue Line with Signing of Macoy Erkamps

Fox happy with his latest signing

The Sheffield Steelers have completed their defensive unit for the 2026-27 Elite League season with the signing of experienced Canadian defenceman Macoy Erkamps.

The 31-year-old arrives in Sheffield following a season in Germany’s DEL with the Iserlohn Roosters, where he made 41 appearances. Prior to that, Erkamps spent two-and-a-half seasons in Sweden’s Allsvenskan, icing for both Västervik and AIK.

Before making the move to Europe, Erkamps enjoyed a successful six-year professional career in North America, playing 137 games in the American Hockey League (AHL) and a further 122 in the ECHL.

Steelers Head Coach Aaron Fox believes Erkamps will bring a competitive edge and defensive reliability to the club’s blue line.

“Macoy is coming in with a real appetite to win and plays with a willingness to do whatever it takes.

“He competes extremely hard and will fill a shutdown role against the opposition’s top players.

“Macoy skates exceptionally well and will really help our transition game with clean exits and good reads through the neutral zone. He’s also someone who knows when to jump into the rush and support the attack.

“He has an excellent stick, a great understanding of the game away from the puck and brings the type of defensive awareness we’re looking for.

“I’m really looking forward to getting him into our lineup and helping us win hockey games.”

Speaking from his home in Vancouver, Erkamps said he is excited to begin the next chapter of his career in Sheffield.

“I’ve been aware of the growth of hockey in the UK for some time and I’m really excited to be joining the Sheffield Steelers.

“I’ve spoken to friends who have played in Sheffield, including Kevin Tansey, Daniel Ciampini and Josh Nicholls, and every one of them told me I was making the right decision.

“After speaking with Aaron, I had a really good feeling about the opportunity. I like the role he sees me playing and it’s one I’m very comfortable with.

“I’ve always been a defence-first player. Of course, I enjoy joining the rush and helping to create offence when the opportunity is there, but I’ll never sacrifice that defensive mindset.”

Erkamps is expected to arrive in Sheffield in mid-August and is set to make his first appearance at the Utilita Arena when the Steelers host the Cardiff Devils in a pre-season clash on Sunday 30th August.

With the addition of Erkamps, Aaron Fox has now completed his defensive group for the 2026-27 campaign, giving the Steelers a blue line packed with experience, mobility and strength at both ends of the ice.
