Balmas and Dowd for the Steelers
The Sheffield Steelers suffered their first Challenge Cup defeat of the season on Sunday evening, going down 4-2 against Coventry Blaze at the Skydome.
Coventry built a commanding four-goal lead early in the second period before Mitchell Balmas and captain Robert Dowd gave the travelling Steelers support something to cheer.
Despite Sheffield having the better of much of the later action, the damage had already been done and the Blaze held on to take the points.
First Period: Blaze 2-0 Steelers
The Steelers made a lively start and created some early opportunities, but it was Coventry who struck first.
At 1:53, Ryan Richardson opened the scoring, beating Lucas Brine to give the home side an early advantage.
Sheffield responded positively and were handed the first power-play opportunity of the night when Richardson was called for hooking.
Mikko Juusola and Brandon Whistle both threatened around the Coventry net, but the Blaze penalty kill stood firm.
The Steelers were then forced onto the penalty kill themselves when Whistle was assessed two minutes for high sticking.
Ryan Tait and Macoy Erkamps produced important blocks, but Coventry eventually made the extra man count.
At 17:54, Brett Perlini found space at the back door and converted to make it 2-0, with Matthew Gleason and Márkó Csollák collecting the assists. EIHL
That was how the opening period ended, leaving Sheffield with work to do.
Second Period: Blaze Stretch the Lead
Coventry carried their momentum straight into the middle period.
Just 1:18 after the restart, Jaxson Ezman made it 3-0, finishing from Brett Perlini.
Then, at 23:39, Artem Buzoverya took advantage of a turnover at the blue line and raced away to beat Brine on the breakaway, stretching the Blaze lead to 4-0. EIHL
The Steelers needed a response and found one through Mitchell Balmas.
Balmas created space and fired past Sisu Heikkeri at 28:23, with Robert Dowd collecting the assist, to reduce the deficit to 4-1. EIHL
The game opened up from there, with chances at both ends.
Sheffield received another power-play opportunity when Buzoverya was called for hooking, but Coventry again defended the situation well.
There was also concern when Ivan Björkly-Nordström went down and required attention, although he was able to return for the third period.
A late opportunity for Leevi Teissala was denied before Brine made an important stop at the other end to ensure the deficit remained three heading into the second intermission.
Third Period: Dowd Gives Steelers Hope
The Steelers came out strongly in the final period.
Juusola and Teissala both tested Heikkeri, while Sean Collins produced an excellent backcheck before turning defence into attack.
As the period progressed, Sheffield continued to push and were given another power-play chance when Andrew Nielsen was called for tripping.
The Steelers were unable to capitalise with the extra man, but shortly afterwards captain Robert Dowd produced a superb finish.
Dowd fired high into the top corner at 53:23, assisted by Teissala, to make it 4-2 and give Sheffield renewed hope. EIHL
The Steelers continued to press, but Coventry protected their advantage through the closing stages.
A late slashing penalty to Aatu Aarnio further interrupted Sheffield’s attempts to build one final push and the Blaze saw out the game to secure the 4-2 victory.
Dowd Takes Man of the Match
Robert Dowd was named the Steelers’ Man of the Match after scoring Sheffield’s second goal and assisting on Balmas’ earlier strike.
It was a frustrating night for Aaron Fox’s side, who improved considerably after falling four goals behind but ultimately left themselves too much to recover.
