Steelers Progress to Cup Semi

Steelers vs Coventry Blaze in the Final 4

Steelers qualified for the Challenge Cup semi final with a convincing 5-1 victory over the Manchester Storm, a 10-2 aggregate victory.

The semi final will take place in the New Year against Coventry Blaze, who came from 4-0 down against Belfast Giants to win the game 5-4 after overtime and a penalty shoot out.

Steelers had home debuts for Zach Vinnell and new signing Finlay Ulrick.


Anthony Morrone once again started in goal, keeping his impressive Challenge Cup run going.

First Period …

After killing a Brien Diffley tripping minor the Steelers took control with Cole Shudra opening the scoring at 11.46 (assisted Vinnell & Whistle)

Steelers then had a 4 minute power-play after Will Merchant took a double minor for high sticks at 15.32

Mitchell Balmas took full advantage scoring two power-play goals at 16.58 and 17.59 for a 3-0 scoreline (8-1)

Second Period …

Chase Harrison took a minor penalty early on for tripping but Steelers power-play failed to convert.

They didn’t have to wait long to extend the lead to 4-0 at 28.10 when Brandon Whistle scored, assisted Cole Shudra

Things got feisty at 31.21 when C. J Garcia was challenged by Kevin Tansey after he took a checking from behind penalty against Patrick Watling. Both players took 5 minute fighting penalties.

Third period …

Storm got on the board at 46.12 when Tyler Hinam scored past Anthony Morrone

Messrs Hinam and Vinnell clashed at 48.25 with more 5 minute penalties for fighting.


Brett Neumann completed the scoring with 3.11 remaining as he scored the 5th goal (assisted Watling and Juusola)
