Steelers Strike Back in Style with Five-Star Performance Over Devils

Game Summary

Back on home ice at the Utilita Arena Sheffield, the Steelers delivered the perfect response to a bruising week, sweeping aside the Cardiff Devils with an emphatic 5-1 victory. After the heartbreak of Wednesday’s overtime exit to the Nottingham Panthers and a tough road loss to the Belfast Giants on Friday, the Steelers needed a statement performance. They got exactly that.

From the first puck drop, the Steelers set the tone with pace, physicality and clinical finishing. Mikko Juusola led the charge with two goals, while Robert Dowd, Mitchell Balmas and Jordon Southorn added to the tally in a dominant display that saw the Steelers outshoot the Devils 32-28 on the night.

Eamon McAdam, stepping in for Matthew Greenfield, was assured between the pipes, turning aside 27 of 28 shots for a 96.43% save percentage. At the other end, Christian Stoever was replaced by Ben Bowns in the third period after conceding four times on 25 shots. The Steelers’ response to adversity, both from earlier in the week and within the game itself underlined the character in the locker room.

With Sam Tremblay returning to the line-up and the defensive corps reshuffled, this was a composed and ruthless performance from the Steelers.

First Period [1-0]

The Steelers began with urgency, clearly intent on erasing the frustration of recent nights. Robert Dowd showed sharp reactions at the Devils’ blue line, plucking the puck out of the air before Ryan Tait forced an early pad save from Stoever. The Devils were immediately put on the back foot and required to ice the puck under pressure.

Juusola soon cut in from the right wing into the slot, drawing another strong save, as the Steelers’ forecheck hemmed Cardiff in their own zone. The Devils responded through Joey Martin, whose tip from the slot tested McAdam, but the Steelers netminder matched Stoever save for save in the early exchanges.

The breakthrough came at 7:00 and it was no surprise that it fell the Steelers’ way. Mitchell Heard fed the puck in from the left wing and Juusola did the rest, ripping a shot top shelf from the slot to send the home crowd into raptures. Stephen Harper collected the secondary assist as the Steelers’ pressure finally told.

Midway through the period, tempers flared. After a missed tripping call on Patrick Watling, Brett Ferguson took liberties at the crease, punching Tremblay and taking a swipe at McAdam after the whistle. Tremblay responded with a high cross-check and, following review, was assessed a five-minute major plus a game misconduct. Ferguson received two minutes for roughing, and shortly after Evan Mosey was called for high sticks, putting the Steelers on a 4-on-3 shortened powerplay.

The penalty kill unit stood tall. The Steelers absorbed sustained pressure but limited Cardiff to the outside, clearing traffic and allowing McAdam clear sightlines. When the horn sounded, Juusola’s strike separated the sides, with the Steelers leading 10-6 on shots and firmly in control.

Second Period [4-0]

The second period could hardly have started in more chaotic fashion. Just three seconds in, Joey Martin was penalised for delaying the game at the face-off, but the Devils nearly turned the tables with a dangerous 3-on-1 short-handed chance that tested McAdam’s sharpness.

Cardiff enjoyed a spell of possession, with Gleason Fournier and Brandon Estes both forcing saves, but the Steelers weathered that push and struck ruthlessly on the powerplay at 24:56. After Tyson Helgesen was called for slashing, Juusola struck again; this time with a deft tip in front from Mitchell Balmas’ delivery, with Brett Ritchie adding the secondary assist.

With confidence surging, the Steelers poured forward. At 28:19, Dowd ghosted in at the back post to make it 3-0, finishing clinically from Southorn and Watling’s setup. Stoever denied Dowd moments later with a remarkable outstretched pad, but there was little he could do at 33:57 when Balmas went bar down over the blocker for a stunning fourth. The goal, unassisted, prompted an immediate Cardiff timeout.

The Steelers were relentless. Tait nearly added a fifth on a breakaway, flashing just wide, as the Devils struggled to contain wave after wave of pressure. By the second intermission, the Steelers had outshot Cardiff 25-18 and built a commanding 4-0 advantage through three unanswered goals in the frame.

Third Period [5-1]

Cardiff turned to Ben Bowns to start the third, seeking stability, but the Steelers continued to create. Juusola and Ritchie combined on a two-on-one early in the period, only for Bowns to produce a sharp save at the back post.

The Devils found a lifeline at 48:53 when Kohen Olichefski finished smartly across McAdam at the back door, assisted by Ryan Barrow and Ferguson. It was a well-worked goal and earned Olichefski Cardiff’s Man of the Match honours, but the Steelers’ response was immediate and emphatic.

Just under two minutes later, Southorn restored the four-goal cushion. Dowd drove play to the net, forcing a save, and Southorn crashed the blue paint to bury the loose puck, with Jasper credited with the second assist.

From there, the Steelers managed the game professionally although the Steelers were unable to covert on a late holding minor to Brandon Estes. McAdam remained composed, finishing with 27 saves and deserved recognition for a strong performance in his return to the crease, but it was Mikko Juusola who picked up the Man of the Match award for the Steelers for his double on the night.

With an open training session for season ticket holders on Tuesday, attention now turns to Saturday’s home clash with the Coventry Blaze, followed by a trip north to face the Fife Flyers.
