3 More Years for Matt Greenfield

The Grass isn’t any “Greener” anywhere else says Matt Greenfield.

“I looked at my options and there wasn’t a better one than returning to Sheffield” said two time Elite League MVP Matt Greenfield “to be back for the next three seasons is incredible and I can’t wait to continue with this fantastic group of coaches, team mates, ownership and of course the fans”

So, to confirm, Matt Greenfield has signed a new three year contract with Aaron Fox and the Steelers meaning he will be with us in Orange until at least the end of the 2027/28 season.

“How can’t I be excited about this one” said Foxy, on confirming the signing.

“Greener is the back to back league MVP and gives us top end play and a chance to win every night.

“To get him back on a long term deal is an extremely important piece to our group for the short and long term. Not only a great player on the ice but just a great person and teammate off it and in the room.

“Greener’s level of preparation and professionalism is pure class.

“I wasn’t sure if this was gonna be possible but after exploring some other options he felt this one was still the best for him and his wife Sydney so I’m glad we could stay patient and get this done”.

Matt Greenfield joined the Steelers prior to the 2022/23 season and since then has posted some incredible numbers in his three years with the club…

In 158 league, cup and play off games, Matt Greenfield has been the talk of the Elite League ensuring that coaches and General Managers around the EIHL voted him the leagues best not once, but twice!

The Grand Slam of 2023/24 also meant that Greener got to show off his talents in the Champions Hockey League, and what a showing he put on…

Greenfield not only helped the Steelers to the Round of 16 wining 4 games in the round robin phase of the competition but also posting a saves average of over 92%.

It ensured that “Greener” was voted the goalie of the competition.

“Of course we had options” said Greener “but my wife and I love it in Sheffield, it is our second home and when we sat down and weighed everything up. Sheffield kept coming out on top.

“I did look at other leagues, after the last couple of seasons I had, plus with the great CHL run we all went on, of course there were talks but I stayed in touch with Foxy and I decided that Sheffield was where we wanted to be and if we could iron out a long term deal I’d be happy and I am, we both are, this is great news.

“I love working with the group of people in Sheffield, all of the coaches and coming to the rink to be with this group of players is special. I hope we retain as many as possible.

“Ownership and management has always been good to me, to us all, so really the decision was a no brainer, and thats before you even mention the fans. Skating out to 7, 8, 9,000 crazy Steelers fans is incredible. You never take that feeling for granted and I don’t.

“We will be back in Sheffield before we know it and to be honest we can’t wait”
