RIP Scott Metcalfe

Steelers 2001 Grand Slammer Passes Aged 58

It is with great sadness that the Steelers learn of the passing of Scott Metcalfe (58)

Scott was a member off the Steelers 2001 Grand Slam side coached by Mike Blaisdell

“Metta” played 53 games in that historic season scoring 8 goals, 16 assists for 24 points helping the Steelers win all four trophies on offer that season, The Challenge Cup, Benson & Hedges Cup, Ice Hockey Super League and post season Play Offs.

Scott passed away on the 6th June and leaves behind his wife, Jane; sons, Tanner and Keegan; and daughter, Quinn.

Born in Toronto on the 6th January 1967, Metcalfe played his junior hockey in the OHL for Kingston between 1983 and 1987. In 1985 Scott was a First Round pick for the Edmonton Oilers (20th overall)

Metta went on to play 19 games in the NHL for Edmonton and Buffalo whilst playing over 500 AHL games, the majority with Rochester Americans where he was their captain.

With two spells in Germany (1991-93 and 1998-2000) heading to England in the summer of 2000 was not his first time away from North America, what an impact he made in a troubled off ice season, Metcalfe and his team mates made Steelers history and was considered to be the best team that had ever played on our shores.

Steelers club spokesmen said “It is a sad day as we learn this tragic news about Scott

“Metta was a larger than life character who was one of the leaders and captains of the Grand Slam side of 2001. A player who stood up for his team mates and gave his all on the ice every night

“Our condolances go to Jane and the Metcalfe family”
