Cardiff Devils 5-0 Sheffield Steelers

First Period

The opening period between the Sheffield Steelers and the Cardiff Devils got off to a lively start, with both sides testing each other early while their starting netminders, Matthew Greenfield for Sheffield and Christian Stoever for Cardiff, settled into the game.

The Steelers looked sharp in the opening exchanges, generating some early pressure, but it was the Devils who struck first. At 8:41, Kristoff Kontos opened the scoring with a well-taken goal, finishing off a slick play set up by Cole Sanford to give Cardiff a 1–0 lead.

Following the goal, the Devils grew into the period, controlling stretches of possession and forcing Greenfield into a handful of solid saves. Sheffield responded with bursts of offensive zone time but struggled to beat Stoever, who remained composed between the pipes.

By the end of the first period, Cardiff held a narrow 1–0 advantage, thanks to Kontos’ finish, in what was shaping up to be a tightly contested Elite League clash.

Second Period

Cardiff carried momentum through much of the middle frame, controlling possession stretches and forcing Sheffield onto the back foot. Despite a few promising rushes from the Steelers, they struggled to generate sustained pressure in the offensive zone, with Cardiff’s defensive structure holding firm and limiting high-quality chances. The second period between the Cardiff Devils and the Sheffield Steelers saw the home side tighten their grip on the game with a disciplined, patient performance that gradually wore down the Steelers.

As the clock ticked down, the Devils found their breakthrough late in the period. At 39:52, Joey Martin doubled the advantage, finishing clinically to make it 2–0. The goal came from sharp puck movement, with assists credited to Josh MacDonald and Kohen Olischefski, capping off a well-worked play just seconds before the intermission.

The late strike gave Cardiff a significant boost heading into the third, while Sheffield were left with a mountain to climb after a frustrating and largely contained second period.

Third Period

The third period turned into a dominant, and increasingly heated, finish for the Cardiff Devils as they pulled away emphatically from the Sheffield Steelers.

Cardiff wasted no time extending their lead early in the period. At 41:24, Cole Sanford made it 3–0, finishing a play set up by Kristoff Kontos and Nolan Yaremko. The pressure kept building, and just over five minutes later (46:25), Brett Perlini added another, with Riley Brandt and Brandon Estes assisting, pushing the score to 4–0.

Frustration began to boil over for Sheffield, with Mitchell Heard picking up multiple penalties for unsportsmanlike conduct, reflecting a loss of discipline as the game slipped away.

Things fully erupted at 52:54 in a chaotic sequence. Nolan Yaremko capped off Cardiff’s performance with their fifth goal (5–0), assisted by Brett Ferguson and Kontos. Immediately after, a major scrum broke out leading to a flurry of penalties on both sides.

Cardiff’s Jimmy Oligny was assessed a 2-minute minor (cross-checking), a 5-minute major (fighting), and a 10-minute misconduct, while Sheffield’s Mitchell Heard received matching fighting and misconduct penalties. Additional misconducts were handed to Riley Brandt and earlier to Cole Sanford for abuse of officials.

From there, the game effectively lost any remaining flow, with penalties dominating the closing minutes.
