Game Summary
The Steelers saw their three-game winning streak come to an abrupt halt as the league-leading Belfast Giants skated out of the Utilita Arena Sheffield with a 4–0 victory in the opening game of a crucial double-header weekend. Despite stretches of strong play and territorial advantage early in the contest from the Steelers, the visitors proved ruthlessly efficient in front of goal, with netminder Jake Kupsky delivering a flawless performance between the pipes.
The Steelers entered Retro Weekend riding momentum and icing a full roster, with Matthew Greenfield getting the start in goal while Kupsky guarded the Giants’ crease. The home side began brightly, dominating the opening stages and outshooting Belfast early, but struggled to convert their pressure into a breakthrough. Instead, the Giants capitalised on a fortunate bounce midway through the first period to seize the lead against the run of play.
From there, Belfast gradually settled into the contest. Their opportunistic finishing contrasted sharply with the Steelers’ inability to beat Kupsky, who turned away everything thrown his way. While Sheffield continued to create chances, hitting the crossbar and forcing several key saves, the Giants struck twice in the second period to open a commanding advantage.
The final frame followed a similar pattern: Sheffield pushed for a response but found themselves repeatedly frustrated by Kupsky’s composure and Belfast’s disciplined defensive structure. A fourth Giants goal midway through the third period effectively sealed the outcome, leaving the Steelers with plenty of effort but little reward on the scoresheet.
Although the Steelers finished with the edge in shots and faceoff wins, the clinical nature of the Giants proved decisive. Sheffield will now look for an immediate response in the second game of the weekend as the two sides meet again at the Utilita Arena.

First Period – Giants Strike Against the Run of Play (0–1)
The Steelers wasted little time asserting themselves in the opening minutes, buoyed by a lively Retro Weekend crowd. Just 22 seconds into the contest, Mike Lee was called for elbowing against Patrick Watling, giving the Steelers an early powerplay opportunity. Sheffield moved the puck well, with Robert Dowd forcing a sharp blocker save from Kupsky before Evan Jasper fired narrowly high, but the Giants managed to escape the early pressure unscathed.
The momentum remained firmly with the Steelers through the opening ten minutes. Stephen Harper burst through the neutral zone to create a quality chance but was denied by Kupsky’s glove, while Joona Huutula followed up moments later with a blue-line drive that the Belfast netminder handled confidently. Jasper also had the home crowd briefly celebrating when he fired into the side netting, fooling many inside the arena into thinking Sheffield had taken the lead.
Chances continued to fall the Steelers’ way as the period progressed. Mitchell Balmas was sent in alone from the Giants’ blue line and attempted a slick forehand-to-backhand move, but Kupsky stayed with the play and held firm. Despite Sheffield controlling possession and generating the better looks, the Giants remained within touching distance.
Then came the moment that shifted the period. At 11:03, a puck deflected off a linesman as the Steelers attempted to transition through the neutral zone, springing Belfast back the other way. In the ensuing scramble around the crease, Jordan Kawaguchi battled for the loose puck and managed to jam it past Greenfield to give the visitors a 1–0 lead.
The goal allowed the Giants to settle and the remainder of the period became more balanced, with fewer high-danger chances for either side. Still, Sheffield finished the opening frame ahead in the statistical battle, leading shots 10–6 and dominating the faceoff circle 10–4. However, the scoreboard told a different story as the Giants carried a one-goal advantage into the intermission.

Second Period – Giants Capitalise on Opportunities (0–3)
Belfast wasted little time doubling their lead in the second period. Just over two minutes after the restart, former Steeler Brandon Whistle delivered a pass across the offensive zone that was deftly tipped home by Carsen Twarynski at 22:07. The redirection gave Greenfield little chance and suddenly the Giants had breathing room with a 2–0 lead.
The Steelers looked to respond quickly and continued to test Kupsky. Huutula and Ryan Tait both forced the Giants’ goaltender into solid stops, while Harper came agonisingly close to getting Sheffield on the board when his effort rattled the crossbar. Moments later Huutula circled the net and fired a dangerous pass toward the back post for Balmas, but the puck narrowly evaded the waiting stick.
Midway through the period the Steelers were forced onto the penalty kill after Mikko Juusola was called for tripping at 25:40. Greenfield produced one of the saves of the night during the advantage, sliding across his crease to deny a powerful shot from the right point and keep the deficit at two.
Despite Sheffield continuing to edge the play in stretches, Belfast struck again when given the chance. At 31:56, the puck was lost in the Steelers’ defensive zone and Ben Freeman pounced, snapping a shot into the top corner beyond Greenfield to extend the Giants’ lead to three.
Frustration began to creep into the game late in the period. Dowd was set up in front by Tait but couldn’t quite guide the puck past Kupsky, and a boarding penalty against Mitchell Heard at 38:41 led to a heated exchange along the boards. Even while short-handed, Balmas broke in behind the Giants defence but was again denied by Kupsky’s sharp goaltending.
After forty minutes the Steelers still held advantages in shots and faceoffs, yet the clinical finishing of Belfast had them firmly in control with a 3–0 lead heading into the final period.

Third Period – Giants Seal the Result (0–4)
The third period began with the Steelers immediately facing adversity. Just 22 seconds after the puck dropped, Jack Dougherty was penalised for delaying the game after clearing the puck out of play, leaving Sheffield to navigate a brief five-on-three situation while still killing Heard’s remaining penalty time. The Steelers’ penalty kill stood tall, however, successfully surviving both disadvantages to keep the scoreline unchanged.
With the kill completed, Sheffield pushed to find a spark offensively. A scramble around Kupsky’s crease involving Watling nearly resulted in the Steelers’ opening goal, but the puck refused to cross the line. Physicality also ramped up as Kevin Tansey absorbed a high hit that went uncalled, drawing the ire of the home bench.
Heard produced one of Sheffield’s best individual moments of the night when he danced through the slot with slick stickhandling, only to see his final effort fail to beat Kupsky. At the other end, Scott Conway tested Greenfield with back-to-back chances that struck the goaltender’s shoulder and chest as the Giants continued to threaten on the counterattack.
The visitors eventually added a fourth at 48:11. Nicolas Guay was afforded time in the slot, drifting laterally across the zone before firing a precise shot past the moving Greenfield to extend the lead to 4–0 and effectively put the game out of reach.
A late powerplay for the Steelers arrived when David Goodwin was called for slashing at 52:48, but by that stage the momentum had faded and Sheffield struggled to generate meaningful pressure. As the final horn sounded, it marked a tough night for the home side despite their efforts, with Belfast claiming a 4–0 win behind Kupsky’s standout performance.
