Game Summary
The Steelers returned to the Utilita Arena Sheffield on Sunday night hoping to respond after the previous evening’s shutout defeat to the league-leading Belfast Giants. Despite a bright start and an early goal from Mitchell Balmas, the Sheffield Steelers were unable to find a second breakthrough as the visitors eventually skated away with another 4–1 victory.
The Steelers made a change between the pipes, giving Eamon McAdam the start in place of Matthew Greenfield, while Belfast once again relied on goaltender Jake Kupsky after his shutout the night before. Early momentum was firmly with the Steelers, who played with urgency and intensity in front of a lively home crowd.
However, much like the previous evening, the Steelers struggled to turn territorial advantage into goals. Belfast weathered the pressure before capitalising on key moments, with Ryan Smith proving decisive with two goals, including a late empty-netter that sealed the result.
The Steelers actually finished with the edge in several statistical categories, winning the face-off battle convincingly and generating 38 shots overall, but Kupsky was once again a major obstacle. With time winding down in the regular season, the Giants’ clinical finishing proved the difference as they strengthened their grip at the top of the standings.

First Period [1–1]
The Steelers came flying out of the gates and nearly opened the scoring within seconds of the puck drop. On the very first shift, Evan Jasper jumped on a loose puck deep in the Giants zone, cutting hard across the slot before being denied. The puck then fell kindly for Dominic Cormier, but Kupsky was alert to keep the game scoreless.
The breakthrough came less than a minute into the contest. At 0:58, Balmas made the most of a fortunate bounce off the end boards, gathering the puck at the top of the crease and showing slick hands to pull it around Kupsky’s outstretched pad before sliding it home. Assists went to Ryan Tait and Jack Dougherty as the Steelers grabbed an early 1–0 lead.
Momentum remained with the Steelers through the opening minutes, even while killing off a tripping penalty to Cole Shudra at 2:45. The penalty kill unit handled the Giants comfortably, and the Steelers continued to control possession and zone time as the period progressed.
Further opportunities came as Mikko Juusola twice tested Kupsky, first with a drive from the slot and then from the left wing during an extended shift that pinned Belfast in their own zone. Yet despite the pressure, the Giants found a late equaliser. At 18:34, a long stretch pass fell perfectly for Ryan Smith, who broke in alone on McAdam and lifted the puck over the glove to level the game. After twenty minutes, the contest was tied 1–1 with the Giants narrowly leading shots on goal 9–8.

Second Period [1–2]
The middle frame began in dramatic fashion, and unfortunately for the Steelers it was the visitors who struck first. During a delayed penalty situation, the Steelers lost their defensive shape, leaving McAdam facing an impossible three-on-none opportunity. At 23:50, Nicolas Guay circled around the netminder and calmly slotted home to give the Giants their first lead of the night.
Belfast threatened again soon after when Brandon Whistle burst through the Steelers zone and sent the puck dangerously into the low slot, but fortunately for the home side there was no teammate there to convert.
The Steelers responded with some of their best offensive pressure of the night. Juusola produced a dazzling rush down the right wing, beating the final defender before cutting toward the crease, only to see Kupsky shut the door. Attempts followed from Shudra, Sam Tremblay, and Ivan Bjorkly-Nordstrom as the Steelers searched for a leveller.
Perhaps the best chance came when Jasper found space in the slot but elected to pass rather than shoot. The puck moved back to Kevin Tansey whose shot was blocked, and Kupsky reacted quickly again to deny the rebound effort from Robert Dowd. Despite outshooting Belfast during the period and dominating the face-off circle, the Steelers trailed 2–1 heading into the final twenty minutes.

Third Period [1–4]
The third period began with the Steelers immediately shorthanded as Dowd was called for hooking Scott Conway just ten seconds after the restart. The penalty kill unit stood firm, limiting the Giants to very little and keeping the deficit at a single goal.
Opportunities remained limited through much of the opening half of the period as the Giants focused on protecting their advantage. The Steelers struggled to generate sustained pressure, though Dougherty did send a shot from the blue line that was cleverly tipped by Jordon Southorn, only for Kupsky to track the deflection and make the save.
A worrying moment followed when Tremblay took a shoulder to the face. Thankfully, the Steelers forward was protected by the cage he had been wearing following a previous incident, though the play went uncalled. Balmas later fired from the slot but again Kupsky was equal to it, blocker-ing the puck away to safety.
With time running out, the Steelers pulled McAdam for the extra skater in the final minutes. Belfast narrowly missed the empty net on their first attempt but soon sealed the result. At 58:27, JJ Piccinich found the empty cage before Smith added his second of the night just over forty seconds later to complete a 4–1 victory and wrap up the weekend series.
