Steelers Takes a Point in 3-2 Penalty Shot Defeat in Guildford

Steelers come back from 2-0 down to take a point in Guildford

Sunday night hockey action and the Steelers travel to Guildford with the same side as beat the Panthers on Saturday night.

The Flames lead 2-0 after 40 minutes, a goal in each period for Paul Dixon’s side.

Once again the Steelers came back with 3rd period goals from Daniel Leavens and Joona Huttula to take the game into overtime

Still scoreless the Steelers went into the shoot out without Mitchell Balmas who was serving a late penalty

The Flames took the extra point with only Mikko Juusola converting for the Steelers in the shoot out.

Scruffy start by both sides with nothing happening until 1.56 when Mikko Juusola took a hooking minor penalty

Almost immediately the Flames took the lead, Matt Greenfield couldn’t find the shot that came in, it bounced and bobbled and finally found a last touch off the stick of Danial Catenacci. Steelers asked for the referee’s to review it but the goal stood.

Brandon Whistle went close in the next shift, moments later Cormier from a tight angle forced a save from McAdam.

Leavens dangled and got a shot away, Whistle followed up with McAdam saving.

Simpson looked like he had levelled after great work from Vallerand. Simpson poked the puck from close range, the save was made.

Best chance of the period, Daniel Leavens, finds the puck off Cormier and with an open net Leavens hits the post

13.46 and Catenacci sent to the box for cross checking. Nice looks on the power-play but we couldn’t find a way past McAdam

As the hooter sounded for the end of the period, Ferguson is claiming a high stick (off Simpson) no penalties called at the end of the period, but that may change by the start of the second.

End of the first period: Flames 1-0 Steelers

The officials decided that there was no case to answer for Mark Simpson so we started 5 on 5 for the middle period.

22.15 and a slashing call against Brandon Whistle, there was a great chance for Welychechaka that somehow Greenfield got across to and made the save – Steelers kill

Vallerand with a one timer that McAdam gets down well to.

Simpsonson down his off wing and gets a shot away, McAdam saves … again.

25.11 and the Flames double their advantage. Tedesco goes solo and a nice finish over Greenfield’s shoulder.

Steelers power-play at 34.15 when Dodero sent to the box for roughing

Good looks for Dowd and Vallerand, Watling creating. Flames full strength.

Tremblay with a blast, Kelly was in front but couldn’t get his stick on it

That with a great effort and Greenfield denies, moments later a turn over and Dowdy goes in alone but McAdam saves.

Final chance of the period as Juusola goes end to end and gets a quick shot away, big pad save McAdam.

End of the second period: Flames 2-0 Steelers

Could the Steelers do it again and come back from 2-0 down …

First of all Matt Greenfield had two blinding saves to make early in the final session.

Then at 44.36 Daniel Leavens was alone in front of goal and hammered home to give the Steelers hope, it was 2-1

Tremblay close as he found McAdam’s glove, Vallerand next as he broke up a play and shot, same outcome, McAdam saves.

Flames 3 on 2 breakaway and Greenfield refuses to be beaten making a stunning save off Tait

Face off win Steelers and back to Joona Huttula – he takes a show that McAdam can’t stop and at 53.58 the Steelers tie it 2-2

Flames had a guilt edge chance in the last second, Huttula this time blocking the shot and saving the day

Overtime was cagey with both teams making sure not to give a goal up

With just 2 seconds remaining Mitchell Balmas took a slashing penalty, this meaning he couldn’t take part in the shoot out

Into the shoot out and it wasn’t to be, Mikko Juusola scored our first goal but Marco Vallerand, Patrick Watling, Daniel Leavens and Brandon Whistle couldn’t add a second whilst Messrs Jacome and Strange scored for the Flames

Steelers take 1 point but it is the Flames who win

Flames 3-2 Steelers
