Steelers 1-0 Devils as Greenfield Stars

Another Great Night at the Arena.

Patrick Watling scored the only goal of an end-to-end game on Saturday night as the Steelers ran out 1-0 victors against the Cardiff Devils in front of over 6,900 fans at the Arena.

Greenfield Starts

Matt Greenfield started the game between the pipes, joined for the first time by back up Angus Laing.

What a night he was to have, once again up against Ben Bowns who was between the pipes for the Devils.

Steelers had the best of the first period, outshooting the Devils 11-1

Head Coach Aaron Fox may have been disappointed that Steelers didn’t go into the first break ahead with Ben Bowns making several big saves.

Devils had their first of three power-plays 2.56 into the middle period when Kevin Tansey took a tripping minor. Steelers killed as they did all night with Greenfield dominant when called upon.

The games only goal came 5 minutes later when Niklas Nevalainen’s shot was saved by Bowns who gave up a long rebound falling into the path of Patrick Watling who fired top corner for the 1-0 advantage

An exchange of penalties at 28.26 when Devils Ryan Barrow (roughing) was joined in the penalty box by Steelers Mitchell Balmas (high sticks)

Devils were back on the power-play (35.12) when Tansey sat out two for tripping before the Steelers had their own one man advantage when Evan Mosey was called for tripping (37.56)

Cardiff’s third and final power-play came early in the final period (42.12) with Daniel Ciampini off for slashing.

Steelers penalty kill completed their 100% success on the night with Colton Saucerman outstanding blocking shots and taking a nasty one to his chest.

Gloves were off at 46.40 when Sam Jones and Riley Brandt both took 5 minute majors

Devils time out and goalie Bowns pulled at 58.16

Steelers again defended brilliantly and saw out the game victorious to the joy of almost 7,000 fans inside the building.

Final Score: Steelers 1-0 Cardiff Devils.
