Game Summary
The Sheffield Steelers made it three wins in a row and continued their impressive form on the road with a dominant 5–1 victory over the Guildford Flames at The Spectrum. Coming off 4-point weekend including and a somewhat chaotic Challenge Cup finish against the Manchester Storm, the Steelers showed no signs of fatigue as they put in one of their most complete performances of the season.
Matthew Greenfield was exceptional once again between the pipes, turning aside 19 of 20 shots, while captain Robert Dowd and forwards Stephen Harper, Evan Jasper, Mitchell Heard, and Derek Gentile all found the back of the net. It was a statement performance, particularly against a short-benched Flames team that fought hard but couldn’t match the visitors’ speed or structure.
The result sees the Steelers strengthen their position at the top of the Elite League standings as attention now turns to a huge weekend against the Belfast Giants and Fife Flyers.

First Period – Steelers Take the Lead [0–1]
Guildford came out quickly despite their limited bench, testing Greenfield early on a power play after Robert Dowd was called for a high-stick less than a minute in. The Steelers’ goaltender was sharp, making key saves on Gosselin from close range, including an outstanding left-pad stop that set the tone for his night.
After weathering the early storm, Sheffield began to find their rhythm. Balmas and Heard created a pair of chances at the other end, while Greenfield continued to stand tall against Nixon and Busch as the Flames pressed on the counter.
The breakthrough came at 12:39 when Stephen Harper muscled his way to the front of the net and forced the puck past Justin Fazio on the rebound. Robert Dowd and Jordon Southorn provided the assists as the Steelers capitalised on their first power play opportunity of the night.
A few more power play exchanges followed, but neither side could add to the score. The period ended with the Steelers up 1–0, Greenfield unshakable, and the Dowd line generating consistent offensive pressure.
Second Period – Steelers Surge Clear [0–4]
If the first period showed Sheffield’s defensive resolve, the second underlined their offensive firepower. The Steelers came out flying, striking three times in a devastating two-minute spell that silenced the Spectrum crowd.
At 27:54, Evan Jasper got a vital touch in front to redirect Cliff Pu’s drive past Fazio, doubling the lead. Less than a minute later, the Steelers went back on the power play, and Mitchell Heard made it count, batting in a rebound after a rocket from Dominic Cormier struck the bar.
Just 40 seconds later, it was Robert Dowd who added a fourth. The captain unleashed a wrister from the slot ager a wayward pass from the Flames that pinged off the post, deflected off Fazio’s back, and trickled over the line for an unassisted goal that epitomised Guildford’s night.
With Fazio struggling with injury and the Flames reeling, Guildford made a goaltending change, bringing in Taz Burman. But the Steelers kept up the pressure, testing the new netminder repeatedly as Burman was forced into several difficult saves before the period closed. The Steelers left the ice 4–0 up, full value for their advantage and in complete control.
Third Period – Finishing Strong [1–5]
Sheffield began the final frame on the carry-over powerplay but couldn’t extend the lead early. Still, they controlled possession and continued to dictate the tempo, limiting Guildford to sporadic breakouts.
At 47:15, another face-off win in the offensive zone set up Derek Gentile, who fired home a quick shot through traffic after a clean draw from Heard making it 5–0 to the visitors.
Greenfield then stole the spotlight again with a spectacular double-pad save midway through the period, denying what looked a certain goal. Guildford finally found a consolation through Cole Ully, finishing off a neat two-on-one play from Nixon at 53:46. But that was as close as the Flames got.
The closing minutes saw Sheffield calmly close out the contest, with Huttula delivering some strong defensive shifts and Greenfield maintaining his focus right to the final horn.

Post-Game Notes
It was another commanding road performance from the Steelers; disciplined, clinical, and defensively solid. Greenfield’s consistency continues to anchor the team, while the balance across Sheffield’s forward lines once again proved decisive.
Man of the Match honours went to Mitchell Balmas for his two-assist performance and high work rate, while Jake Gravelle earned the Flames’ award for his tireless play at both ends of the ice.
The Steelers now turn their focus to a crucial weekend double-header, welcoming the defending champions Belfast Giants to the Utilita Arena on Saturday before travelling north to face the Fife Flyers on Sunday. With league momentum firmly in their favour, Sheffield will be looking to carry this confidence into what promises to be another high-octane weekend of Elite League action.
